What are the Patriots and Patriot Guard Riders and what do they do?

We solicit input from local citizens about their relatives in the military. When we discover that a son/daughter, husband/wife, dad/mom, or a brother/sister are arriving from or deploying on a mission, we get together and plan a Welcome Home or a Deployment event.

We collect e-mail addresses and phone numbers of local patriotic citizens, elected officials, fire and police personnel and veterans organizations and invite them to celebrate at a location selected by us. You can help us by gathering information for us. One of the groups that the Kingman Patriots invite are the Patriot Guard Riders, which is a nationwide motorcycle group

In the event of a death of a soldier, the Patriot Guard Riders are notified first by the government or family. We may then be called upon to help in planning a funeral or memorial service.

Patriot Guard Riders

The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church, who claim that the deaths of U.S. service members in Iraq and Afghanistan are divine retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. The Patriot Guard positions itself to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the Westboro protesters by blocking the protesters from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group also drowns out the protesters' chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines.

The group's mission quickly expanded to include the funerals of law enforcement officers, fire department personnel, all first responders, and any active duty member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces from all previous wars and conflicts and is now largely focused on recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of deceased soldiers as well as their families and loved ones. As of April 28, 2008, the group reported over 137,000 members. In addition to their attendance at funerals, the group also greet the soldiers at welcome home celebrations, deployment ceremonies, and perform volunteer work for veteran's organizations such as Veterans Homes. The group also assists families in financial difficulties with travel and housing arrangements, and also visit military hospitals to encourage and honor soldiers of the United States.
